Times Like These

Are there people out there who, like me, seem to be in a constant state of giddiness these days?

If you are a sports fan in the GTA there really is something in the air and it is wonderfully contagious. Whether you call it hope, positivity or simply happiness, it does not matter. In times like these, it is best to just ride the wave and enjoy yourself as much as possible.

The last time I felt like this was around 1992/93 when the Blue Jays and Maple Leafs made loud noises in the post season. It was a great time back then as friends and strangers shared a drink, a high five and even a hug as we got together and cheered our teams on.

Over 20 years have passed and I realize that that these emotions don’t come around often so it’s best not to ignore them. In times like these, it is best to share these experiences with others and create lasting memories.

Here is Florence and the Machine and my favourite cover of the Foo Fighters song, Times Like These.

So what’s really happening in sports that are causing this?

Well, it is close to spring so we look forward to the beginning of a baseball and soccer season with even more anticipation than ever before as both are coming from playoff seasons. The Blue Jays haven’t done that in over 20 years and TorontoFC hasn’t it done before. Ever.

The Toronto Argonauts, who don’t usually get a fair shake, are moving into a better suited, cozy stadium that has the opportunity to provide an in-game experience like never before. Challenging time for them? Yes. Exciting? You bet!

Our beloved Maple Leafs are battling for last place in the entire league and yet, never has there been a more positive aura around them since those days when Gretzky stole a trip to the finals from them. There is a strong belief that a new era in Leafland has begun and it will lead to a championship caliber team in the near future. Of course we are excited.

We have a Raptors team that is challenging for the Eastern Conference, dynamic duo Kyle Lowry and Demar DeRozan in the All-Star game and now, on the verge of a significant playoff run. These are heady times indeed. The city is on fire and you should take every possible moment to soak it in and enjoy it.

The Blue Jays did not win the World Series last year, but Jose Bautista and his bat flip, Josh Donaldson and his clutch hitting and let’s not forget Kevin Pillar’s superman like antics in the outfield, all of which provided us with those, “Do you remember where you were?” memories that we will cherish forever.

Moments such as the nights at Jurassic Park where we showed the basketball world not only are thousands of us crazy enough to watch a game from outside in the cold, but that we are going to have so much fun doing it that everyone will wish they were there. And they would be welcomed.

It brought the GTA together.
Its times like these, you learn to love again.

It made people think of others rather than themselves.
Its times like these, you give and give again.

It bonded the city.
Its times like these, you learn to love again.

It made us better people.
Its times like these, time and time again.
